Benefit in Kind FAQs
When do I pay Benefit in Kind tax?
BiK tax is usually collected via PAYE throughout the tax year. HMRC adjusts your tax code to collect the estimated tax on your benefits, spreading the cost across your payslips. If your employer does not operate PAYE or your benefits are not included in your tax code, you may need to declare them on a Self Assessment tax return by 31 January.
What is a P11D form?
A P11D is a form your employer submits to HMRC by 6 July each year listing all taxable benefits and expenses provided during the previous tax year. You should receive a copy for your records. The total P11D value is used by HMRC to calculate how much income tax you owe · your employer also submits a P11D(b) to declare the Class 1A National Insurance they owe.
Can I opt out of benefits to avoid BiK tax?
Yes - if your employer allows it you can opt out of taxable benefits and avoid the associated tax. However if the benefit is valuable (such as private medical insurance worth £1,500/year) the tax cost is usually far less than the benefit itself. For a basic rate taxpayer a £1,500 medical premium creates a tax bill of only £300 · still leaving £1,200 of net benefit. Always weigh the tax cost against the real-world value of the perk.
What is Class 1A National Insurance?
Class 1A NI is paid by employers only · not employees · on the P11D value of most taxable benefits. The rate is 15% for 2026/27. If your employer provides private medical insurance worth £1,500, they pay £225 in Class 1A NI to HMRC. This cost is borne entirely by your employer and does not come out of your salary or affect your take-home pay.
What benefits are completely tax-free?
Several common perks are exempt from BiK tax: one mobile phone per employee, employer pension contributions, cycle to work scheme bikes and equipment, childcare vouchers (if joined before October 2018), on-site canteen meals available to all staff, workplace car parking, and trivial benefits costing under £50 each (up to £300/year for directors). The cycle to work scheme and salary sacrifice pension are particularly tax-efficient ways to receive benefits from your employer.
