Your FIRE number is the total investment portfolio you need to retire. Using the 4% safe withdrawal rate, it is your annual expenses multiplied by 25. For example, spending £25,000/year needs a £625,000 portfolio. At that level you can withdraw 4% annually and historically your portfolio will last 30+ years.
The 4% rule was based on US market data. For UK investors a more conservative 3.5% rate is often recommended, meaning multiplying annual expenses by approximately 28.6. UK investors also have the advantage of the State Pension which reduces the amount the portfolio needs to cover.
Lean FIRE is retiring very frugally (under £20,000/year). Regular FIRE targets a comfortable lifestyle. Fat FIRE means retiring on £50,000+ per year. Barista FIRE means leaving full-time work but doing part-time or enjoyable work to cover some costs, reducing the required portfolio size.
Savings rate is the most powerful lever. Saving 10% takes ~40 years. Saving 25% takes ~32 years. Saving 50% takes ~17 years. Saving 70% takes ~9 years. A higher savings rate both grows your portfolio faster and proves you can live on less, meaning you need a smaller FIRE number.
