Frequently Asked Questions

What is a P800 tax calculation?

A P800 is a letter HMRC sends after the tax year ends if they think you paid too much or too little income tax. It shows your total income, tax paid, and any difference. If you are owed a refund, HMRC will usually pay it automatically within 14 working days.

Why might I have overpaid tax?

Common reasons include: starting a new job on an emergency tax code, stopping work part-way through the year without using your full personal allowance, having multiple income sources, receiving a redundancy payment, or HMRC having incorrect information about your income.

How far back can I claim a tax refund?

You can claim overpaid income tax going back 4 tax years. In 2026/27 this means you can claim back to 2022/23. Claims must be made through your HMRC Personal Tax Account at gov.uk or by writing to HMRC.

How long does a P800 tax refund take?

If HMRC has your bank details, refunds are usually paid within 5 working days once you claim online. If HMRC does not have your details, they will issue a payable order (cheque) which takes up to 3 weeks. You can claim directly via gov.uk/claim-tax-refund.
