About Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)

Vehicle Excise Duty is the annual tax on vehicles driven or kept on public roads in the UK. It can be paid annually, every 6 months, or monthly by direct debit (note: paying 6-monthly or monthly costs more than the annual rate). From 1 April 2025, electric vehicles are no longer exempt and pay £10 in year 1 and £195 per year thereafter. The expensive vehicle supplement of £425/year applies to cars with an original list price over £40,000, including options, for years 2 to 6 only. After year 6 you pay only the standard rate. If your vehicle is not being driven, you can declare a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to avoid VED. Historic vehicles (over 40 years old) are exempt from VED. Diesel cars not meeting RDE2 emission standards may be subject to an additional surcharge in year 1 - check your V5C logbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)?
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly called road tax, is an annual tax charged on most vehicles driven or kept on public roads in the UK. It is collected by the DVLA and funds general government spending. You can pay annually, every 6 months, or monthly by direct debit, though the 6-month and monthly options cost more overall than paying annually.
Do electric vehicles pay road tax from April 2025?
Yes. From 1 April 2025, pure electric vehicles are no longer exempt from VED. EVs registered on or after 1 April 2025 pay a first year rate of £10 and a standard rate of £195 per year from year 2 onwards. EVs with a list price over £40,000 also pay the expensive vehicle supplement of £425 per year for years 2 to 6.
What is the expensive vehicle supplement?
If your car had a list price (including factory-fitted options) of more than £40,000 when new, you pay an additional £425 per year on top of the standard rate for years 2 to 6 (five years total). From April 2025 this also applies to electric vehicles. After year 6 you pay only the standard annual rate of £195.
What happens if I do not tax my vehicle?
Driving or keeping an untaxed vehicle on a public road is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £1,000. The DVLA uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to detect untaxed vehicles. If you are not using the vehicle, you can declare it off the road with a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification), which suspends the VED requirement for as long as the SORN is in place.
