Teacher Pay · Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a newly qualified teacher earn in the UK?
A newly qualified teacher (NQT / ECT) starts on M1 of the Main Pay Range. Outside London that is £31,650 gross (2024/25). Inner London M1 is £40,625. After TPS pension and tax deductions, take-home is roughly £2,084/month outside London and £2,560/month in Inner London.
What is the difference between MPS and UPR?
The Main Pay Range (MPS, M1–M6) applies to most classroom teachers. The Upper Pay Range (UPR, U1–U3) is for experienced teachers who have passed a threshold assessment. You must apply to your headteacher to move onto the UPR · it is not automatic. U3 outside London is £49,084 (2024/25).
Does the Teachers' Pension Scheme reduce my tax?
Yes. TPS uses a "net pay arrangement", meaning your employee contributions are deducted from gross pay before income tax is calculated. This gives you tax relief at your marginal rate. NI, however, is still calculated on your full gross salary · TPS does not reduce your NI bill.
Can part-time teachers use this calculator?
Yes · enter your FTE percentage (e.g. 60 for 3 days per week). Your gross salary, TPS contribution, tax, NI and take-home are all scaled proportionally. Your TPS pension rate band is based on the full-time equivalent salary, not your part-time earnings.
Do teachers in Scotland and Wales use these pay scales?
No. Scotland has its own pay agreement set by the SNCT, and Wales follows the Welsh STPCD which mirrors England closely but may differ after separate pay awards. If you are in Scotland or Wales, use the "Custom salary" option and toggle "Scottish Taxpayer" if applicable.
