The average Band D property pays approximately £2,166/year · around £180/month over 12 months or £217/month over 10 months. How do I find out what council tax band I am in?
Your council tax band is based on the estimated value of your property on 1 April 1991 (England and Scotland) or 1 April 2003 (Wales). You can check your band at gov.uk/council-tax-bands, on your council tax bill, or by contacting the Valuation Office Agency. If you think your band is wrong, you can challenge it · neighbouring properties in lower bands is good grounds for an appeal.

If you are the only adult living in a property you are entitled to a 25% discount on your council tax bill. For a Band D property in England this saves roughly £541/year. Apply directly to your local council · the discount is not applied automatically in most cases. It applies regardless of your income or property value.
Who is exempt from council tax in the UK?
Full exemptions apply to properties occupied solely by full-time students, properties vacated by someone moving into a care home, and properties where all occupants are severely mentally impaired. Student halls of residence are also exempt. Discounts rather than full exemptions apply in other cases · for example the 25% single person discount or reductions under the Disability Reduction Scheme. Some councils also offer a Council Tax Support scheme for low-income households.
